Overview
This itinerary allows you to experience the abundant wildlife of the Great Rift Valley. See herds of Elephant, Grevy’s Zebra, reticulated Giraffe and desert-dwelling wildlife such as the Gerenuk and Oryx while on guided game drives. During your safari, you will also explore the park on foot in the company of a Samburu guide, who will teach you to track animals and talk about how they survive in the arid environment
Itinerary
Your Driver-Guide reports to your hotel for the start of the safari, with a 7.30 am departure for a picturesque drive descending the Great Rift Valley and onwards to Masai Mara, Kenya's famous game reserve (Drive time 5.5 hours). On arrival, you will be introduced to the exceptional wildlife of the Maasai Mara. The park is famously known for its spectacular great wildebeest migration and is home to the Big Five; lions, elephants, rhinos, cape buffaloes and leopards. Watch out for herds of wildebeest, zebras, antelopes, and other game animals. You will arrive at camp for lunch. After lunch, you will settle into your tents, spend your afternoon time relaxing in camp watching the crocodiles in the river just in front of your tent. Head out later for an afternoon game drive. Return to camp for dinner and chat with the Masai around the campfire.
Awake at dawn to join your guide for a morning game drive. Game drives are the best way to see the big wildlife including the famous big cats of the Masai Mara. The wildlife in this area is superb, and the guides are very knowledgeable, ensuring you get the most out of your time here. Head back to camp for breakfast. Enjoy the afternoon relaxing in your tent as you wait for your next adventure. In the late afternoon join your guide for an afternoon game drive. Be amazed by the variety of wildlife in the Mara and see how there is never a dull moment on safari. Conclude your game drive with a sunset sundowner of drinks and snacks enjoyed under an Acacia tree. Return to camp for dinner, followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace.
After breakfast, we will set off to Naivasha driving through the beautiful Great Rift Valley. Arrive in time for lunch. Refresh and relax as you take in breathtaking views of your Lodge.
After breakfast, we depart for Samburu National Reserve arriving in time for lunch. Afternoon game drive at the Park home to the rare species of Grevy’s zebra, long necked gerenuk, the shy oryx beisa and the reticulated giraffe. You drive along the curves of the Ewaso Nyiro river, the only source of water for this dry area, following the cool green riverine forest of doum palms, acacia and tamarind. Dinner and overnight. The game viewing at Samburu is amongst the best in Kenya.
Rise early in the morning when the animals are most lively for a morning game drive with your Guide. Get to see the Reticulated Giraffes and Grevy Zebras some rare species in other parks, but quite common in Samburu. Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area. Enjoy a picnic breakfast at leisure. Head back to camp in time for lunch. After lunch, there are optional activities that you can partake Visit a traditional Samburu Village. The Samburu area is home to interesting people with a rich heritage, making for a colorful cultural experience. An essential part of their culture is the art of dancing. In the evening join your guide for an afternoon Camel Ride. Traverse the arid landscape at a gentle pace to the soft tinkling of camel bells, and relax into the seductive rhythm of this unique safari is conducted by a Samburu warrior. Return to camp for dinner and a relaxing evening out under the stars.
After a sumptuous breakfast, embark on a morning adventure. Besides game drives, one of the best ways to experience Africa is on foot, so set out on guided walks with a local warrior. During the early hours, temperatures are low, thus providing a favorable atmosphere both for the game and the viewer. Learn the finer details of the bush and experience the traditional lore of the local Samburu people. Follow the tracks of kudu or zebra and listen to the ancient songs of the Samburu as they water their livestock. Your guide will also let you touch the plants and learn about their uses as well as teach you how to track animals. Head back to camp for lunch. Relax for some time before your next adventure. After afternoon tea, you will head out on an evening game drive looking for elephants and perhaps some hunting lions.
On the final day of your Samburu & Masai Mara safari, there will be time for one last early morning game drive. You will have a bush brunch in the heart of the Samburu National Reserve before your guide returns you camp. Once you arrive at camp gather your things ready for your transfer. Your guide will drive you to Nairobi. The driver will drop you off at your hotel, or transfer you to the airport for your onward flight home.
